Bringing The IBC To You LIVE

In 2012, we began the Live Shows from the Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street. Live Show #1 was hampered by technical difficulties (we crashed the system for all of the bars tied into the River City Management internet, shutting down their cash registers in the process!) Then, on Finals day, we could not connect to the wireless system at the Orpheium Theater, so we shut that show down, and never tried again.
2012 SHOW SPONSORS - THANK YOU ALL! CLICK TO REACH THEIR SITES
I do want to thank some people without whose help I would not have been able to put on the live remote shows this week:
Jay Sieleman, Executive Director and Joe Whitmer, Deputy Director of The Blues Foundation - For their acceptance of my proposal and support with logistics to get the shows done.
Robert Tooms, Jack Rowell Jr., and Leo Goff - For their constant encouragement and offers to lend equipment needed to get the shows done. Three fantastic musicians whose musicianship is only exceeded by their giving souls.
Carson Lamm, Vice-President and Director of Entertainment, River City Management - for giving me such access to the Rum Boogie Cafe Banquet Room and providing Internet access for the shows. Carson was also helpful with promotional materials.
The Staff At The Rum Boogie - Man, these guys were great on Tuesday when the internet went down and then all through the week, checking in to ensure all was going well. Joe, Kenny and the bartenders and servers...you guys ROCK!
Orpheum Theater - For the use of their internet and allowing me to broadcast from there on Saturday, even if the shows could not be broadcast.
The Musicians - Thank you for coming by and talking. Thank you for continuing to spread Blues Music to the world.
The Listeners - Without you, the show could not exist.
Finally and most importantly, my beautiful bride Nancy. Not only was I not home all this week, but for the last 9 months she has had to live with me working to put this all together; bouncing ideas off her, making suggestions, calming my nerves as the days drew closer and, as always, being my rock. I moved to Memphis 5+ years ago and found my Mississippi love soon after. Oh, and she is the one I forced to record all of the bumpers for the shows!
SHOW # 87 - 01/09/12 - IBC PREVIEW
SEAN CARNEY
Sean Carney had traveled to Memphis with Teeny Tucker twice for the International Blues Challenge. Both times they made it to the finals. Both times they came in Third Place and both times Sean was a Finalist for the Albert King Most Promising Guitarist Award.
Then in 2007, Sean brought his own band to Memphis for the IBC and made the finals.
This time they won and Sean took home the Albert King Award.
Sean joined me to discuss his life, his IBC years and the years after. he shared some information regarding the IBC for future entrants and we played music from his Very Lucky Man album.
TRAMPLED UNDER FOOT - Segment Begins At The 50:11 Mark
In 2008, Danielle, Kris and Nick Schnebelen made their way through the Kansas City IBC prelims and made their way to Memphis. Children of parents who had been busy in the KC area blues scene for years, the three who make up the band Trampled Under Foot, took the town by storm and won the whole thing. Nick was also won the Albert King Award. Danielle and Kris joined me on The Couch and discussed their childhood growing up in a music family and how they each played separately until coming together and forming the band in 2004. We also heard music from their latest album Wrong Side Of The Blues.
SHOW # 88 - 01/16/12 - IBC PREVIEW
JP SOARS
JP Soars & The Red Hots won the Band Challenge at the IBC in 2009. Soars also individually won the event's Albert King Award, which established him as the best guitar player in the competition
I talked to JP about his career and the three visits he made to the IBC, eventually winning it all. He gave some advice to those going to the IBC regarding the rules and listening to others. We also discussed his new project, Southern Hospitality, a band he is performing in with Damon Fowler and Victor Wainwright.
The music we heard came from his great album More Bees With Honey.
SHOW # 89 - 01/23/12 - IBC PREVIEW
GRADY CHAMPION
Grady Champion and his band won the 2010 Band Challenge at the IBC. Grady discussed how his musical career changed from rapper to the blues, the thrill of playing in front of 1 person or 10,000 people and playing with his son. He also discussed his thoughts on the International Blues Challenge and the benefits it has afforded him. You may be surprised at Grady's answer to my question "If you had not won the IBC, would your career be the same?"
NATHAN JAMES - Segment begins At The 55:10 Mark
Nathan James has created a musical identity with his homemade instruments and self taught skills. He came to Memphis in 2007 with his then musical partner Ben Hernandez and took first place in the Solo/Duo Challenge. Where does he come up with the ideas for his many custom instruments? How did the IBC impact his career and would he be where he is today without the win? These are all things Nathan and I discussed during our time on The Couch.
'LITTLE' JOE MCLERRAN - Segment Begins At The 98:30 Mark
In 2009 Little Joe McLerran came to Memphis for the IBC for the fourth time and this time he walked away with the top spot! From the time he was a mere lad, Joe knew music was going to be his career. he and his brother would busk at the local mall and come home with pocket-loads of money. How did the IBC change his career path and how is his career moving along at this time? Joe explains. He also gives some sage advice to those who are coming to Memphis this year or in the future.
